The Journal usually records the following: correspondence received and memoranda issued by the Mayor; the names of people granted interviews and the subject of the interview; deputations received; the Mayor's engagements; and the names of visitors.

Newsclippings about the Mayor are often pasted into the journal, including reports of Council meetings. The Mayor's Secretary also recorded details about Council meetings, including conversations not included in the official minutes of Council.

The front of the journal contains an alphabetical index by subject.

John Young was Mayor in 1886 only. The last entry in the journal was for 30 December 1886.
