The faded signs on the three-storey corner building at 20-22 Margaret Street indicate it was once a ‘residential chambers’ offering ‘good clean beds’. Perhaps itinerant waterside workers lodged at this boarding house, as it was close to the Darling Harbour wharves. When this photograph was taken on 22 July 1918 by Milton Kent, it was the middle of winter. Women can be seen scavenging timber. There are workmen on the road and a woman and child walk down the lane. A gas lamp in the immediate foreground of the photograph was for the Burwood Hotel, which was directly opposite.LanguageNo linguistic content - Not applicable (zxx)Special citationThis was a steep, sharp and dangerous intersection.
