Mark Blow’s Crown Studios was the largest photographic company in Sydney in the 1890s, employing 82 operators, assistants and artists. This photograph was taken from the Queen Victoria Building diagonally opposite. The windows of the photographic studio and adjacent hotel are blackened. Crowds of pedestrians gather under the awnings and on roadway out the front. Traffic fills the busy intersection, including a tram with two passengers on the running board, hansom cabs, motor cars, and horses and carts. Fifty returned soldiers helped to fight the blaze, and the proprietor of the Roberts Hotel managed to rescue his talking parrot.
