Appended: Memo from Chas H Woolcott, Town Clerk, notifying resolution of Council, 14 April 1874, to refer the matter back to the Committee; Report of the Improvement Committee, 18 September 1873, recommending purchase of the buildings; Report of the Improvement Committee, 19 February 1874, retracting their recommendation after consideration of advice from the City Solicitor, stating that City Funds ought not to be used for this purpose; Letter from Thomas S Harwood, attorney for John Harris, June 1873, agreeing for the sum of £325 to remove the tenements and messuages and appurtenances from the land (ie Butcher shop and iron House etc) on the northern boundary of premises in the occupation of Hopkiss, Hay and Corn dealer; Petition, 10 November 1870, from freeholders and residents of the Haymarket, George Street South, for the removal of the encroaching buildings with annotation by Edward Bell, City Engineer, [see separate item description]; Scale map showing encroachments; Memo, title deed, giving history of ownership, transfers, leases etc of land since granting in 1818; Letter from WW Stephen, Department of Lands, in response to Council's plan for proclamation of Victoria St, noting that John Martin has impugned the dedication so no further action by the Government is possible until Council takes further action; Memo from Richard Driver, City Solicitor, with opinion on aspects of the conveyances of the Ultimo Estate and John Harris's entitlement to the portion relating to Engine Street/Victoria Street; Letter from Thomas S Harwood, Ultimo Estate Office, attorney for John Harris, 20 October 1875, notifying that Harris had been unable to attend his office to settle the matter as he was unwell.
