(Note: refer to Mr Sapsford for report: JY. Referring to the letter of Messrs J Stewart & Co dated 22 March 1886 I have the honor to state that the whole of the issue rests entirely with the Contractors in not making themselves thoroughly acquainted with the plans and the work already executed in previous contract -- I must say the setting out of some of the work by the Contractors has not been satisfactory and has had to be rectified by the Clerk of Works -- The jointing of the stones in question I certainly do not feel justified in overlooking, being a piece of bad construction and exhibits a want of knowledge. The attempt to cast the blame on my assistant (Mr McRae) is out of place, and the assertions made by the contractors are untrue and misleading, and by entertaining these petty complaints will create a precedent which may cause unnecessary trouble during the progress of the works: THS;24/3/86.
