Letter - Complaint about noise from dancing at Denison Hall, Harris Street Ultimo, 1896

Waldie, 479 Harris Street, Ultimo to The Mayor complaining about the noise of music and dancing at Denison Hall, 438 Harris Street nightly up to two or three o'clock in the morning. The building is made of galvanized iron and has several open windows facing the street. Also letter from L. M, Harris Street complaining of the same nuisance and adding there is no proper sanitation. Report from Inspector of Nuisances that upon inspection he found there was no sanitation and he has reported this to the City Building Surveyor. However as to the dancing the Council has no power to interfere and the Police according to Inspector Bell also seem powerless to control the evil of dancing saloons. Redfern Council has passed By-Laws (ss116-118) requiring premises to be licensed but he doubts their validity. If the City Council had similar power it would obviate the nuisance but it would require a special enactment.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
