They cover 1968-1984 as they were continued by the Planning and Building Department after South Sydney was amalgamated with Sydney City Council.DescriptionThis series contains building application plans submitted to South Sydney Municipal Council for approval under Ordinance 70 of the Local Government Act 1919. They include plans for alterations and additions as well as new buildings.

The series is controlled by:
- South Sydney Municipal Council Building Application Registers [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-03090 in the period 01/08/1968 to 31/12/1981, and
- Planning Street Cards (AS-0533) in the period 01/08/1968 to 31/12/1984.

The series was created by:
- Town Planning Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AG-0026) in the period 11/03/1981 to 31/12/1981
- Planning and Building Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AG-0024) in the period 04/06/1975 to 11/03/1981
- Development and Building Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AG-0025) in the period 05/06/1974 to 03/06/1975
- Town Planning and Development Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AG-0021) in the period 01/08/1968 to 04/07/1974.
- Planning and Building Department (AG-00080) in the period 01/01/1982 to 31/12/1984.

Applicants were required to submit a building application form, two sets of building application plans (one of which was kept by Council), and a specification of the work to be carried out. A building application file was raised and the file and plan were registered with the same annual single number, using Building Application Registers [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0309). The plan was stamped as either approved or disapproved by the Building Surveyor under delegated authority from Council. They were also indexed by street address in Planning Street Cards (AS-0533).

On 1 January 1982, South Sydney Municipal Council was amalgamated with the Sydney City Council. The records of South Sydney Municipal Council, including the building application plans in this series, were transferred to Sydney City Council, where they have been maintained separately in AS-0092.

From 1982 until the end of 1984, building application files and plans relating to the former South Sydney Municipal Council area, were registered as a separate block beginning with application numbers 5000 onwards for each year. This explains why this series continued for three years after the abolition of South Sydney Municipal Council.
