It was created by the:
- Planning and Building Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AG-0024) in the period 04/06/1975 to 11/03/1981
- Development and Building Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AG-0025) in the period 05/06/1974 to 03/06/1975
- Town Planning and Development Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AG-0021) in the period 01/01/1969 to 04/06/1974
- Town Planning Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AG-0026) in the period 11/03/1981 to 31/12/1981

The files contain papers raised by the departments that relate to the planning and building function but were not directly related to building and development applications, which had their own separate series, Building Application Files [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0091), and Development Application Files [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0093).

The Miscellaneous Files dealt with internal staffing matters, purchase of office equipment, conferences attended by staff, complaints from the public, sign applications, circulars from Government Departments etc.

The Miscellaneous Files were given an annual single number with the number 1 placed in front of the year to distinguish the Miscellaneous Files from Building and Development Application Files, for example 24/1/63.

The main index to the series is Planning Streets Cards (AS-0533), although some of the files are registered in Health and Building Miscellaneous Register [South Sydney Municipal Council], 1969-1981 (AS-0750).

Most of the files relating to routine matters were destroyed in 1998.
