It is indexed by the Planning Street Cards (AS-0533) in the period 01/09/1946 to 31/12/1981 and the Building Application Registers [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0309) in the period 01/08/1968 to 31/12/1981.

The series commenced on 1 August 1968 but earlier content to 1946 is included. It was created by the:
- Town Planning Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AG-0026) in the period 11/03/1981 to 31/12/1981
- Planning and Building Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AG-0024) in the period 04/06/1975 to 11/03/1981
- Development and Building Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AG-0025) in the period 05/06/1974 to 04/06/1975
- Town Planning and Development Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AG-0021) in the period 01/08/1968 to 04/06/1974.

The files usually contain a copy of the completed building application form, correspondence, minutes to and from the Town Clerk and various departments and Building Inspectors' reports. When the approved work was finished the file was stamped ‘completed'.

The applicant also had to submit two sets of plans, one of which is kept by Council, and a specification of the work to be carried out. Once approval was granted, work could begin on the structure. Council's building inspectors carried out routine inspections of the work to ensure that no unauthorised work was carried out.

The files are housed in buff file covers with a different coloured binder for each year. They are labelled ‘Building Application’ and the address of the premises is handwritten on the front.

The applications were numbered with an annual single number. For example, the first application for 1968 was numbered BA 1/68. The same number was allocated to the file, plans, and specifications.

In 1968, when the South Sydney suburbs were split off from the Sydney area to form Northcott Municipal Council (subsequently renamed South Sydney Municipal Council). The Building Application files from 1946 to August 1968 which related to the new South Sydney area were transferred to South Sydney Municipal Council. The files were not renumbered and became part of this series (AS-0091).

From August to December 1968, when Council was known as Northcott Municipal Council, the files were given the prefix ‘N’.

The files appear to have been culled at some stage, with applications for minor alterations destroyed.
