It was controlled by the Planning Street Cards AS-0533 (01/08/1968 to circa 14/3/1984).

In 1968 the South Sydney suburbs were split off by the Local Government (City of Sydney Boundaries) Act 1967 from the City of Sydney area to form the new Northcott Municipal Council (soon renamed South Sydney Municipal Council, SSMC). Building application files, relating to the South Sydney area and predating the new Council, were transferred from the Council of the City of Sydney, but the registers were not.

South Sydney Municipal Council staff created new registers following the system operating in the City Building Surveyor's Department at the time. When South Sydney Municipal Council was abolished in December 1981 by the Local Government (City of Sydney Boundaries) Act 1981, the South Sydney Municipal Council registers were passed on to the City Council's Planning Department where they were maintained separately until December 1984. In 1985 the South Sydney Municipal Council building applications were merged with the City Council's in the computerised DABA system.

Any building activity (excluding the erection of a wooden fence around the yard and minor replacements of building parts), needed to be approved before work could commence. A building application form and two sets of plans of the proposed building activity were submitted by the applicant. The application was then given a number in the sequence of annual single numbers. The same BA number was used for the BA file and plan.

The number of the application was entered into a building application register together with the following information: receipt of application fee; name and address of owner; address of property; nature of application and estimated cost; date and decision taken; date of completion.

This series consists of 2 volumes. The first volume includes applications numbered 1/68-152/76. The second volume includes applications numbered 92/79-131/80. The register for the period 27 May 1976 to 13 February 1979 has not been located.
