South Sydney Municipal Council Development and Building Department

Unique IDAG-0025DescriptionOn 5 June 1974 Council resolved to abolish the Town Planning and Development Department and separate the town planning function from the processing of development and building applications. The latter function became the chief responsibility of the new Development and Building Department.

Mr J Sampson was appointed Chief Development and Building Officer on 17 July 1974 and commenced duty on 12 August. The department was located in Waterloo Town Hall (the Forward Town Planning Department was located in Redfern Town Hall).

The separation of functions was not in practice a happy one. After less than six months service, Mr Sampson resigned (27 January 1975) and Mr Orr became acting head of the Development and Building Department (while remaining Director of the Forward Town Planning Department).

On 5 June 1975 the situation was resolved by reamalgamating the functions. The two departments were abolished and the new Planning and Building Department was established.CreationResolution of Council 5 June 1974AbolitionResolution of Council 4 June 1975
