Unique IDAS-0904DateBetween 1st June 1989 and 31st December 2023Date qualifiercircaFormatPhotograph - PrintDescriptionThis series represents Council's current library of photographs, taken to provide images of current events (mainly civic occasions and the like) in which Council is involved or which it has organised. The images are taken almost entirely by professional photographers on contract, although the quality of the results varies considerably. Also included are images of objects (such as buildings and public artworks) in which the Council has an interest, and there are some posed shots intended for specific publication, in the Annual Reports or elsewhere.

The images are generally taken for immediate business purposes, not as an historical record of events.

The photographs are in a variety of different formats. There are colour transparencies (35mm and larger formats), colour and black-and-white prints and negatives, contact sheets and digital images.

A numbering system was used by the creating agencies, starting with 1000 in June 1989 and had reached 1468 by June 1995. The numbers were assigned chronologically, when the photography assignment was given or when the images were filed. The system is not a subject classification system.

A further batch of images transferred to the Archives in 2001 was in near total disorder, the numerical control system having broken down during the late 1990s. For this batch the Archives has imposed an order and an alphanumerical control system:
Sequence 'A': 35mm mounted slides in boxes.
Sequence 'B': 35mm mounted slides in sheets.
Sequence 'C': larger format transparencies.
Sequence 'D': prints.

A box of CD-ROMs containing digital photos was transferred to the Archives and uploaded to a network drive in 2009. A selection of these photos were added to ArchivePix.

A further selection of photographs was transferred digitally in 2021.
