Extract of report of Alex Halkett, I would however beg to draw your attention to the carelessness of the corporation in the matter of the sewers. I examined the Silt Pits underneath the gratings of the Street gutters in Margaret St and neighbourhood & found them all full & moreover they draw the fire plugs of the water mains & thereby washes the whole debris of the streets & gutters into the Harbor ... 17/5/78 Insp Nuisances report: CHW. 22/5/78 In reply to the letter from the Department of Public Works dated 17th Instant, I have the honor to report that on Friday last the gully shafts in Margaret Street and the neighbourhood were thoroughly cleaned out, at which time I am informed they were not half full.
