(Note: 5/4/78 City Health Officer and Inspector of Nuisances to report: CHW. In reply to the letter of the Honorary Secretary to the Health Society of New South Wales, we have the honor to report that the nuisance alluded to has been many times prosecuted in the Police Courts but without putting a stop to it - We are of opinion that the practice of curing hides and skins within the City should be strictly prohibited, and although it may be advanced that a law prohibiting the practice may be ojected to as an interference with trade, we cannot see why trades noxious to the health of the people, should be permitted within the limits of this growing City - As at present, raw hides and skins are brought in to be cured at these Stores, and the effluvia arising therefrom is without doubt injurious to the public health, as well as offensive to the senses. The case of typhoid fever alluded to in Mr Bradley's letter, although terminating fatally in the quarter was, we are credibly informed by the father of the deceased, not contracted there, but in the Infirmary where the patient had been at work; and with regard to the skin diseases referred to, we have made enquiry in the neighbourhood and have been informed that no such disease has ever been prevalent in the locality. - Still we are of opinion that the trades in question should not be permitted within the City Limits: GFD & RS; 9/4/78. 9/5/78 City Solicitor report: MC. If it can be clearly shewn that the trade or business came in before any of the premises within mentioned is a public nuisance the parties offending may be prosecuted.
