(Note: City Engineer rec'd 22/7/87. This accident was brought about by the sloppy nature of the clay fillilng during the exceptionally wet weather of the past few weeks. If the men had rammed it more the result would have been only to still further puddle it. I am of opinion that it is better to pay the sum demanded than go to law on the faith that the Burwood Council have duly inquired into the matter. The Burwood Council gave considerable help in keeping the streets in order during the pipe laying: JTJ; 27/7/87. As requested by the writer men have been sent to restore the surface of the trenches since the dry weather set in: JTJ. 30/7/87 I will see the Mayor of Burwood and learn more about this before considering to pay.
