(Note: 21/11/88 Ack. City Surveyor. This is a letter from the Under Secretary for Public Works dated the 20th instant re the renewal of wood pavement in George Street West disturbed in connection with Sewage works. The work proposed is a necessary one and the proposal in my opinion is worthy of favourable consideration. The Estimate evidently allows undisturbed concrete being sufficiently good for foundation of wood pavement and as the probable cost is quoted it will be as well to clearly understand in anticipation of extras & contingencies that the Government will contribute two thirds of the whole cost of reinstating the whole length of Roadway disturbed by their operations and making good the entire width of pavement between Tram rail and kerb of George Street West in a thoroughly workmanlike manner. In this work it will be well to charge the cost to the City Fund as the initial cost was from Streets Loan Fund which is already absorbed by works in prospect: RWR;22/11/88. Committee.
