Re the letter sent anonymously about Mrs Mary Downey: she is the widow of James Downey who for a number of years was employed as a ganger in Seymour's department, but died six years ago from consumption; in consequence of his very good character his widow was permitted to have a horse and cart employed by the Council, and there has been no cause for complaint. Attached is a letter signed "A fellow citizen", which alleges that she wears silks and satins, owns property on Sophia and Reilly Streets Surry Hills, has two sons on mens' pay and a 16 year old boy running the streets; there is a rumour that she poisoned her husband for the young man Patrick Dumphy who is her driver.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
