DescriptionThis series contains the agenda and business papers of the standing committees of the South Sydney Municipal Council, 1968-1981. They were created by South Sydney Municipal Council Deputy Town Clerks Department (AG-0020).

The Committees were called the Finance, Works, Planning and Development and Health and Recreation Committees. From the meeting of 12 June 1974, the Works and Planning and Development Committees were combined to form the Works, Planning and Development Committees. Papers of the Municipal Office Building Committee, which was a special committee that met from time to time are not included in this series. The whereabouts of these papers is subject to further research.

The records of the Finance Committee dealt with all financial matters of the Council, including the subjects of loans, insurance, property valuations, salaries, acquisitions rates, estimates and accounts. Matters were submitted for consideration from various departments.

The Works Committee papers were about building and development applications and were generated by the Town Planning and Development Department. Building and development applications are listed in the agenda with street name, followed by a DA or BA number which refers to the file number.

The papers of the Planning and Development Committee dealt with the subjects of traffic conditions and lighting and were generated by the Municipal Engineer's Department.

The papers handled by the Health and Recreations Committee were on sports and community facilities, parks and noise abatement.

In 1974, the Works and Planning and Development Committees were amalgamated and the papers of the new committee dealt with development and building applications, street and traffic matters.

The agendas for each committee meeting often give file references to miscellaneous files (AS-0095), street and subject matter files (AS-0087) and building and development application files (AS-0091 and AS-0093).

Decisions made by the various committees on subjects referred to them by municipal departments are elevated to the full Council meetings for approval and recorded in Minutes of Council [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0058).

The sets of agenda and business papers for each of the committees are collected together into papers for one day. The papers for the meetings from 1968 to 1970 are loose in manila folders. From 1971 to 1976 they are bound in black volumes. From 1977 they are a mixture of bound and unbound papers.

Colours were used to identify the committee papers, e.g. all Finance Committee papers are green, Health and Recreations are pink; Works are white; and Planning and Development Committee yellow. When the Works Committee and the Planning and Development Committee were integrated, their papers were printed on yellow.

Each set of papers are proceeded by a notice of meeting advising councillors of the date of meeting on council letterhead. Items numbers on the agenda appear at the top of the related papers for the meeting. Some items appear in the papers of more than one committee and this is noted at the top of the paper.

The agenda and business papers for the years 1968 to 1970 were not located until 1990, and therefore were not included in the original 1983 microfilming of the papers for 1971 to 1981.
