The registers were created by City Engineering and Building Surveyors Department (AG-0061) in the period 01/01/1930 to 31/05/1936 and the City Engineers Department I (AG-0005) in the period 01/06/1936 to 27/05/1985.
Each park, reserve or playground was allocated a number, which appears on the top right-hand corner of the register pages. The volumes are indexed alphabetically by name at the front of each volume.
Each entry contains a description of when the land was first dedicated for public recreation; when it came under Council control and how; details of any legislation affecting the land; details of resumptions and any other changes to the land, including if it was transferred to the control of another Council; related file, deed packet, and plan numbers, related Resolutions of Council and Government Gazette numbers; area measurements; and a coloured plan of the area.
It is not clear when the registers first began to be compiled, but it appears to have been around 1930, with references dating back to 1811. The first volume seems to have been compiled from around 1930 to 29 May 1942, the second from 1937 to 1985. Volume 2 is an updated version of Volume 1 with additional entries so there is no need to consult Volume 1.

Folio 71a has a list of when parks were dedicated for public recreation, a breakdown of the total area of parks and playgrounds in the City, additions and deductions from parks and reserves for the past twenty years (1933).
Folios 105 to 111 of Volume 1 have a list of parks and reserves under, and not under, Council control.
