With reference to the letter from Mr Thomas wishing to be informed if he is not entitled to have 4 boxes of rubbish etc. taken away from his place of business Nos 517 to 523 George Street I have the honor to report that a very great quantity of rubbish accumulates on these premises every day in connection with that gentlemans business. On the 25th instant I visited officially this "Coffee Palace" and found four very large boxes and a bath filled with business rubbish, hat boxes, papers and house refuse. I informed Mr Thomas that it was too much for the Corporation carters to remove every day and reminded him that they are permitted to take away mere house refuse only which must be placed in small boxes in the proportion of one for each house or premises and that in justice to other ratepayers I could allow only such quantity to be removed. I may add that great complaints have been made by the occupants of adjacent premises notably the employes of Mr Goodlett some of whom have been prostrated with sickness arising from abominable odours emanating from the fatty, and the vegetable refuse of the Cook House placed in boxes, baths, and other receptacles in the yard of Mr Thomas' establishment: RS; 29/9/88.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
