(Note: 17/10/88 Ack. Mr Seymour: JH; 17/10/88. Received: RS; 17/10/88. With reference to the complaints by Mrs Gilder of sewerage matter from the drains at Elizabeth Bay mixing and lodging in the seaweed, thereby causing a nuisance. I have the honor to report to Your Worship that the above lady has on several occasions brought the matter under my notice, and that I have done all in my power to keep the drains in the locality thoroughly and regularly cleansed. It appears to me that the main sewerage pipes here, have not been laid so as to convey the drainage into deep water, hence the cause of complaint. The remedy of the evil therefore I respectfully submit is within the province of the City Engineer: RS; 18/10/88. Acting City Engineer. Literally the complaint is that the lodgement of sea weed adjacent to the correspondent's residence causes a nuisance; follows an application that the seaweed be periodically removed. As the Council has not control of the waters the terms of this letter should in my opinion be addressed the Harbours and Rivers Department.
