Management of the City Library and all the associated responsibilities including purchase of books, lending services, newspaper reading room.
As early as October 1875, Council was considering the offer of the Town Clerk to purchase reference books for the "Town Hall Library" that would be useful for the Aldermen and the Officers of the Corporation, and the Public generally".[CRS 22/17].
The Library has been managed at different times as an independent department (1909-1929 and 1960-1971), and as part of an administrative department within the Council.CreationResolution of Council, 28 Sep 1909.
Council agreed to accept responsibility for the Lending Branch of the [State Library of NSW].
