The files mainly contain copies of minutes, letters and reports duplicated in Town Clerk's Department Correspondence Files (AS-0034). The series is controlled by the Indexes to City Engineers Correspondence Files AS-0732 in the period 01/01/1950 to 31/12/1976.

The files deal largely with the construction and reconstruction of streets and pavements, and town planning, but all matters presented to the Engineering staff for comment or action could have had a file raised - lighting, zoning, subdivisions, land leases etc.

It is not clear when this series started but it was probably in 1925 when the City Engineer and City Surveyor's Department (AG-0088) was created. It created the records until 31/08/1928. The City Engineering and Building Surveyors Department (AG-0061) created the records in the period 31/08/1928 to 01/06/1936. The City Engineers Department I (AG-0005) then created the records in the period 01/06/1936 to 17/11/1988.

According to officers in the Department, the series ceased in 1976, but it is more likely to have been at the end of 1978 when Council introduced a centralised filing system. However, seven of the surviving files had papers added to them as late 17 November 1988.
