The letter drew attention to a specific sign board being erected by Mr Coffill in George Street which the Underwriters Association claimed could be dangerous if there were a fire. The letter also raised the question of large sign boards and advertising generally which could be fire hazards and that this matter should be dealt with by the Fire Brigades Board. The letter went to the Mayor who asked for a report. The City Surveyor noted that with regard to the specific board in question it was being erected on the boundary line of the property and as such Council had no control over the matter. However, he is presently engaged in accumulating information on this matter with the aim of enabling the Mayor and Council to frame new by-laws covering such hoardings and signs.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
