Unique IDA-00444811SeriesLetters Received from the Colonial Secretary, 1842-1859Date21st March 1853FormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionLetter from Colonial Secretary acknowledging receipt of the Petition presented by the Mayor and a number of Merchants, Traders and other Inhabitants of the City of Sydney expressing disapproval of the recent Act of the Legislature, and the Regulations founded theron, for Management of the Gold Fields of the Colony while praying that the Legislative Council be immediately assembled in order to Repeal that Act with a view to its Reenactment in a less objectionable shape, and advising that: 1) it would scarcely be practicable to convene the Legislative Council for any earlier day than that for which it has already been summoned to meet; 2) as the Writs for two Vacancies in the Elective Members of the Legislative Council are returnable only in early May, it is very desirable that a question of such importance be decided in a House composed of the full number of Members; 3) immediately on the assembling of that Body a Bill for Amending the Act referred to will be submitted for consideration, in accordance with the intimation already made by the Government in reply to similar Petitions proceeding from other Parts of the Colony.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
