Unique IDA-00444902SeriesLetters Received from the Colonial Secretary, 1842-1859Date19th June 1854FormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionLetter from Colonial Secretary acknowledging letter from City Commissioners urging the propriety of Placing on the Estimates for the present year the sum of £10,000 being the Annual Endowment to the City of Sydney which was intended to be proposed for sanction, following Dissolution of the City Corporation, once Magement and Control of City Revenues had been placed in the hands of City Commissioners, noting the necessity for such a Relief to the Direct Taxation of the Citizens of Sydney, and advising that: 1) as the proposed Annual Endowment was to go towards Sewerage and Water Supply for the City, the Loan of £400,000 now Authorised to be Contracted on the Public Credit, namely £200,000 for Sewerage and the like sum for Water Supply, entirely Supersedes the need for such an endowment; 2) while the Loan is eventually to be Repaid with Interest from the Sewerage and Water Revenues, under proper management these Services when completed will yield a large Permanent Revenue after defraying that portion of the loan chargeable theron; 3) the Loan does afford Relief to Direct Taxation for general City improvements as the proposed endowment was intended to supplement the City Revenues while, since the expense of Sewerage and Water Supply is being met by the Loan, the whole of City Revenues are thus released and now become Available for other less costly City Improvements.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
