Unique IDA-00503100SeriesCity Solicitor's LettersDate20th December 1843FormatVolume - Leather BoundDescriptionMemo from City Solicitor: Memo from GR Nichols to the Town Clerk re the preparation of certain bye laws: 1. bye laws for "making all articles taken to the Hay Market for sale chargeable with the same dues as at the George Street Market". Nichols describes the scope of the existing legislation which does not cover the Hay Market; in passing he also notes the limited authority of the Council to make alterations to the existing dues for the George St Markets and the Cattle Market. He suggests that if Council is concerned to prevent the evasion of market dues by persons selling goods on the way to the markets, the English law against forestalling might be brought into force but an attempt to levy dues on goods passing through Sydney would not be in Council's power and would be challenged in court. 2. the prevention of unlicensed skittle grounds etc might best be effected by petition to the Legislative Council for alteration of the City Police Act.
