Unique IDA-00503105SeriesCity Solicitor's Letters, circa 1843-1853Date7th June 1844Date qualifierexactFormatVolume - Leather BoundDescriptionMemo from City Solicitor: Memo from GR Nichols to the Town Clerk transmitting a by law relative to "Tanneries fellmongering establishments and pig sties" which can be added to the by law for suppressing slaughter houses; he was unable to provide for the undefined "other nuisances". He advises that the Corporation Act does not seem to provide authority to make a by law preventing the gratuitous drawing of water from the City Fountains except in buckets or vessels of similar capacity. In response to the complaint that he has not attended meetings of the By Laws Committee, he does not believe it part of his duty to attend Council Committee meetings. He believes the £100 pa he receives from Council to be in the nature of a retainer for professional services not a salary as a Council servant.
