Before the Crown Street engines were erected, the Botany pumps used to raise water to the high level reservoir at Paddington as well as Crown Street. In the event of anything happening to disable the Crown Street machinery, the old pumps could be utilised to take their place during repairs, but the old mains have somewhat deteriortated and it would be useful to know if they would fracture. If they did fracture, no interruption to supplies would ensue as the Nepean supply is abundant and the weak places would be strengthened with a view of future use if necessary.
