C Delohery Junior complaining that his wife and others had been locked in the George St Market on a Saturday night with no warning the gates were to be locked and that the Market Clerk Carruthers was extremely rude and belligerent when he finally opened the gates. (Note: Mr Carruthers to report as to the truth of this statement: JW; 7/3/65. The time for locking the market gates on Saturday nights is ½ past 10 o clock but in order to meet the wishes of the stallholders the following course is adopted, and was done so on last Saterday night - at a quarter to 11 o'clock, I called out in the new market - Lock Up - and the watchman in Sheds C & D commencing at once to lock up each shed leaving one gate open in each shed - as the market clock struck 11 and there still being people in Shed D - and the new market, I went myself and called again for the people to clear out of Shed D - some came out and others remained in. I locked the gaste - as the only means in my power of preventing others from going in - I then went and locked the gate of Shed C, - called lights out in the New Market and turned off the gas - I then went to unlock the gate of Shed D but there was plenty of gas burning in it, as in Sheds C & D the people turn off their own - I am certain from the time the gate was locked until reopened was not more than 5 or 6 minutes at the utmost. There was a female amongst those locked in who said a good deal - I told her to go on. One of the stall holders commenced cursing - to this man I said if you continue to use such language your likely to be locked up a little longer - I had the keys deposited in the station house by 25 minutes past Eleven - the dificulty with me is how to manage the closing of the markets so as to give general satisfaction, J Carruthers, Clerk.
