(Note: Surveyor to report. When the names were preparing to these lanes Mr Burnell was informed by me that the lane in which his property is situate would be called Burnell Lane and he expressed no dissatisfaction but appeared pleased. When, however, the plates were ordered and erected he came in and complained that it was an insult to him and asked then it might be altered. I informed him, the only means of doing this was through the M. Council - it seems strange that a man should hold so much property in a land and feel insulted to have it named after him: EB; 20/4/65.
