Note: Water. Engineer to report as soon as possible: JW. The mere sale of the Lachlan Engine to the Government for any purpose than to erect water works on the Botany and Lachlan reserve which has been handed over to the Corporation, inasmuch as it would bring cash into the pockets of the City and which is now spoiling for want of use - But there is much more contained in this letter than appears upon the surface - but no more than those acquainted with the writer would give him credit for - The Engine on Lachlan Swamp if put in proper order and with proper pumps attached to it is capable of supplying not only Randwick Asylum but Randwick Waverly and Paddington municipalities for some years to come - and as there is no doubt these places will shortly have to be supplied from some source, and there is no other place than the Lachlan and Botany reserves from which they can be supplied - the question arises whether they are to be supplied by the City or whether other bodies are to step in and supply themselves from the City reserves after obtaining the power to do so - I would submit that it is of vital importance to the interests of the City to maintain its sole and exclusive hold to this reserve. To do so it must meet the reasonable demands of its neighbours and give them all the water which can be spared after the demands of the City are satisfied. As this engine if removed to a suitable spot is capable of supplying Paddington, Waverly and Randwick I would recommend that it be retained for that purpose - and that it be taken to pieces, cleaned painted and kept in propr order in the meantime - estimate the cost will not exceed £20: EB; 14/2/66. 15/3/66 Approved: JSutton & write to Govt declining to dispose of Engine.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
