Unique IDA-00313186SeriesLetters Received [Municipal Council of Sydney]DateBetween 28th June 1887 and 30th July 1887Date qualifierexactFormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionLetter from Horace Webb, Norton St Leichhardt, who writes that then Mayor Mr Harris accompanied by the City Health Officer, City Architect and other officers of the Council inspected the northern portion of Kent and Windmill Streets and indicated that three tenements belonging to a “Wells family” were ordered to be pulled down. He alleges that a female member of the Wells family, upon receipt of the information, accompanied by the wife of a Police Court Solicitor, privately interviewed Mr Sapsford, the result of which was that no demolition took place, while other owners in the neighbourhood were compelled to obey instructions. Includes minute paper which notes: 'There is no record of this property having been condemned, the premises may have been inspected for that purpose by the Mayor but no notices were served on the proprietors. I visited and inspected this property some time ago, and found that the houses were in a very bad condition, and not fit for human habitation, and were consequently placed on the list of "buildings recommended for condemnation" under the 31st Section of the City of Sydney Improvement Act, and which list is now in possession of the Mayor: George McRae 14 July 1887.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYesBorn digital itemNo
