W J Whilshire, Royal Hotel Company, Sydney. Complaining of the nuisance of cabs congregating outside the hotel. He has been there for two years. A petition from residents in the neighbourhood resulted in the Council abolishing the cabstand months ago. However the nuisance has actually increased. The drivers stand in the portico of the hotel where they smoke and spit. They jostle and obstruct visitors to the hotel. The nuisance is illegal and the police are not ordering the drivers to their proper stands. There is a note by Edward Orams, Inspector of Licensed Vehicles, that during 1866 they have obtained convictions against 33 cabmen for loitering in front of the hotel in George Street, but they have not had the slightest assistance from the servants at the hotel and 'to that cause we attribute our want of thorough success'.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
