Thomas Broughton, "Bradley". Complaining about 'a most unjust and scandalous interference with my property by some of the Officers of the Corporation.' For the purpose of carrying off the filth and refuse water from the yards opposite his premises near Wattle Street, three surface drains were being constructed across the lane in front of his houses which 'would have caused the filth to retain evaporating under the very noses of my tenants' and if sufficent water was running the drainage woud have flowed through the houses. The lane is private property and used only as a temporary lane for the convenience of his tenants pending other improvements. There is a note by Edward Bell, the City Engineer that the channels were to be constructed because of complaints of mud and filth by persons across the street. Broughton came in to complain as soon as a channel was being opened, and the work was in consequence discontinued by order of the Mayor. The small amount of work completed has 'done considerable good'. There is a note dated 1867 that the street is to proclaimed.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
