Edward Byrne, 64 Stanley and Riley Streets. Objecting to have to pay sewerage rates, when he had a letter from the Town Clerk dated 27 October 1865, saying that he was exempt until the sewer in Stanley Lane was completed. He was now informed that one of the three houses is now no longer exempt. He wanted to pay the water rates for the three houses but was informed that they would not be received until he pays for the water closets. There is a note by Edward Bell, the City Engineer that the drain was laid last December and Mr Bryne connected water closets but did not have water laid on, choosing instead to flush them by buckets. All other closets in the city pay the water rate whether the closets are connected or not. There is also a note from Robert Driver the city solicitor giving a legal opinion. It was decided that the water rate on the closets is not to be collected for the current half year, and if Mr Byrne does not call and sign the bond at the end of December for the ensuing half year, the water supply will be discontinued.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
