Jules Joubert, Chairman, Parramatta River Steam Co, King Street. He refers to the letter sent a few days ago asking permission to remove piles from the north side of the wharf at KIng Street to allow their large steamer the "Adelaide" to land passengers. He has since found out that the Council cannot deal with his company as the lessee is Edward Pritchard and the lease expires next January. Joubert also mentioned that Edward Bell, the City Engineer advised that the piles were there to protect the Watermen's Stairs, and that Bell suggested extending the jetty to the level of Mr John Campbell's. They have already spent several hundred pounds on this wharf and they are willing to extend the length of the wharf, provided they get a long lease. Joubert asks that the council advertise the lease at once, so that in the event of their being the highest bidder, they can get to work at once to add the necessary length. In the event of not becoming lessees, they will have three months to find another landing place. They land upwards of 200 people every day in King Street. There is a notation on the letter that the assent of the Council is necessary before the lease can be transferred or the property sublet.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
