Quarterly report of the health of the City ending February 28th. Gives number of births and deaths, male and female for each month; the total is 788 births and 509 deaths. The infantile mortality (under the age of 5) was 239. He lists the principal causes of death and the number of deaths for each cause. There were 4 deaths from smallpox in January and he recommends that all children be vaccinated. Typhoid fever is also discussed (there were 13 deaths over the quarter). "Typhoid fever still continues rife and is it not to be wondered at when we consider the poisonous gases given off at the principal wharves of the harbour. Take for example the east side of Darling Harbour parts of the Circular Quay and Woolloomooloo bay. The stench at times is unbelievable".LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
