They are "occupants of stores at the Circular Quay wherein sales of produce are almost daily held, such produce consisting of wool, hides, tallow, skins, leather etc and which have all to a certain extent smells, or odours attached to them which odours altho peculiar and natural to the different articles, are in themselves perfectly harmless and in no way offensive". They feel much annoyed that they are singled out for persecution by the Inspector of Nuisances. Attached is a letter from Richard Seymour, the Inspector of Nuisances. He writes that there have been repeated complaints by the passengers by the North Shore ferry boats, by the Clerks and gentlemen attending the Water Police Court and by Drs Eichler and Dansey. Offensive smells were from cow hides being salted on the premises and draining on to the streets. Refuse is cast into the streets, stinking bones lying on the footways for 5 or 6 days at a time.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
