Unique IDA-00444961SeriesLetters Received from the Colonial Secretary, 1842-1859Date8th February 1855FormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionLetter from Colonial Secretary acknowledging receipt of City Engineer's Report and Plan of the Proposed Sewerage of a Portion of the City of Sydney and advising of the following Objections to the scheme, which Alters the Outlet of the Sewers from their natural place of Discharge, at the Head of the Cove, to the Beach at Fort Macquarie: 1) a very heavy Expense must be incurred as a Tunnel must be driven through solid rock, beneath several houses, for a great distance; 2) the Fall of the Sewers must be Altered, made less near the outlet, and Completion of the work unduly Delayed; 3) a continuous Discharge of Silt at Fort Macquarie will gradually Fill up the Anchorage Ground and Form a Bank at the Entrance of the Cove which will have to be removed by Dredger. It is thus considered wisest to follow the line of natural drainage, discharging the Sewerage into the Head of the Cove, unless a Demand for the Sewerage for Manure should be created, requiring a Distribution System for this purpose: a certain quantity of Silt would then be Deposited Annually in the Cove and Removed by the Dredging Machine at a Certain Cost per Ton. Against this Expense must be placed: 1) the Money expended in making this additional Length of Sewer; 2) the probable Cost of Dredging the Silt which will be Deposited in different parts of the harbor by Currents from Macquarie Point. As there is Ground to be Filled up in front of the Botanical Garden, It is noted that the Silt, when dredged, may be Deposited there but should be placed above high water mark.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
