Unique IDA-00445080SeriesLetters Received from the Colonial Secretary, 1842-1859Date28th April 1856FormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionLetter from Colonial Secretary advising that Medical Men are Reporting the existence of Extensive Disease due to the prevalence of Lead in the Water used for culinary purposes and drinking and 1) requesting that City Commissioners report whether, under the new arrangements for supply of water to the City, it may be possible to Substitute, either totally or partially, some other metal or substance for supply Pipes to houses; 2) suggesting that Iron may be used extensively - Cast Iron for straight portions of the pipe and Wrought iron for the bends; while it may be necessary to employ Lead where a flexible pipe is required, the evil would be diminished to such an extent as not to be appreciable [Report from City Engineer, 26 May 1856, appended].LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
