Unique IDA-00445238SeriesLetters Received from the Colonial SecretaryDate1st May 1858FormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionLetter from Colonial Secretary respecting the Report from City Council and Inspector General of Police on the subject of the many Persons in Sydney in Distress due to Inability to Obtain Employment and advising that: 1) as the Legislative Assembly has expressed willingness to vote the necessary sum to defray the charge of removing such persons to those parts of the Country where they can obtain employment, measures for this purpose should be adopted without delay; 2) the object in view may best be carried out by a Committee consisting of the Mayor and City Engineer together with Inspector General of Police, Agent for Immigration and Colonial Architect who have been instructed accordingly; 3) notice should be given in the Newspapers, as early as possible, that the Committee is ready to receive applications from persons alleging inability to obtain employment; 4) the Committee should communicate with the Wardens Road Committees and Commissioners of Road Trusts, who have funds at their disposal for Road Repairs and other Public Works in the principal Districts in the Colony such as Bathurst, Maitland, Goulburn, Port Macquarie and Wide Bay, to ascertain what number of persons they would be prepared to employ; 5) a Circular should be addressed to the Magistrates at those and other places where labor is likely to be required requesting particulars as may enable the Committee to judge what number of persons could be sent to their Districts to obtain engagements in private service; 6) the Government objective is to enable those persons who cannot procure employment in Sydney, and are without means of removing to the Country, to reach a field with a demand for their services; 7) advances to enable the Committee to carry such arrangements into effect will be authorised, from time to time, on application being made to Auditor General who will require that an account of expenditure be furnished; 8) the steps which may be taken by the Committee in this matter should be advised with a full report on the subject provided to Government on termination of their proceedings.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
