Unique IDA-00445231SeriesLetters Received from the Colonial Secretary, 1842-1859Date6th April 1858Date qualifierexactFormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionLetter from Colonial Secretary: 1) advising City Council that, following a Deputation from the Unemployed in Sydney, definite information was requested from them as to the Number of Persons in Distress owing to inability to obtain engagements; 2) transmitting lists of 700 individuals, recorded by Messrs W B Allen, J C White, J Parkins and two other persons, while double that number are reported to be unemployed and actual destitution to exist amongst the Mechanics and Laborers in Sydney; 3) requesting that City Council, in conjunction with Inspector General of Police, institute such enquiry as may be necessary to provide reliable information on this subject; 4) observing that a general complaint has long been made that public and private improvements have been delayed due to the high rates of wages and the difficulty of getting work performed; 5) advising that Inspector General of Police has been instructed to co-operate with City Council in making this enquiry without delay.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYesBorn digital itemNo
