Unique IDA-00445021SeriesLetters Received from the Colonial SecretaryDate20th August 1855FormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionLetter from Colonial Secretary advising that, as the new scheme of Prison Discipline makes it neceesary to provide Work for Gaol Inmates and some arrangement might be made for their Employment in Quarrying and Breaking Stone, for which the City Streets will supply a ceaseless demand, it is requested that City Commissioners furnish a Statement of: 1) the Estimated Annual Consumption of Hard Metal taking into consideration only the annual wear and tear of the street, not the amount required for a full coat, and observing that this wear and tear will vary from ? of an inch to an inch per annum according to the traffic; 2) the Cost of Metal already, per cubic yard, divided into different elements such as Quarrying and Breaking Stone, Conveyance to Sydney, Cartage to Streets etc [Report from City Surveyor dated 03/09/1855 attached].LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
