Unique IDA-00445030SeriesLetters Received from the Colonial Secretary, 1842-1859Date21st September 1855Date qualifierexactFormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionLetter from Colonial Secretary acknowledging receipt of a letter from City Commissioners relative to the Consumption and Cost of Blue Metal used on Sydney Streets and advising that: 1) the Report requested seeks to ascertain the Probable Future Consumption when the Whole City is Metalled - the Probable amount of Loss by wear and tear: ? of an inch per annum on Bye streets and perhaps nearly 3 inches on Leading thoroughfares is considered ample allowance; 2) such Wear and Tear could be greatly Diminished were City Commissioners to arrange for Rolling the Streets After the Metal had been Laid with a heavy roller, say 4 tons weight, making the road at once available and saving the waste resulting from traffic of carriages over loose stone; 3) the Estimate submitted of 5s 7½d for quarrying is considered very great - if labor is skillfully directed it is considered that a man should turn out at least from 2 to 2½ yards per day and should break about ¾ of a yard; 4) should arrangements be made for the Breaking of Stone by Prison Labor at Prospect Hill, such stone will be delivered at the Railway Station at a much lower rate than that given in the Estimate, in fact at half the cost, allowing City Commissioners to make their money go twice as far.
