In the building at the far left is C.H. Slade & Co merchants. Beside this is W. Samuels & Co American Fashionable Ladies and Gents Tailors. The McNamara's Literature Centre (bookshop) is located at 221 Castlereagh Street was known for being 'a famous gathering-point for radicals'. The Manchester Unity Building (MUIOOF) is next door at 219 Castlereagh Street with J & N Tait on the awning. This building was also known as Royal Standard Theatre, and later as the Little Theatre and The Playhouse. The buildings at 219 to 223 Castlereagh Street were demolished in 1923 to make way for the City South Telephone Exchange that was designed by Commonwealth Architect John Smith Murdoch and completed in 1925.
